June 30, 2016

On Thursday at 1:26 PM, KVFD, with the Sadsburyville Fire Company to assist, was dispatched to a two-vehicle crash with one person reportedly entrapped at the intersection of Valley Road and Old Stottsville Road in Sadsbury Township.

Additional callers reported that the driver who was entrapped was screaming for help and that the vehicle was smoking. Engine 8-1 and Engine 8-2 had just cleared from the hazardous materials call and responded from Moscow Road in West Sadsbury. Engine 8-1's crew proceeded to the Central station and switched over to Rescue 8 while Engine 8-2 proceeded directly to the scene.

Battalion Chief Sly from the Westwood Fire Co. was in the area and arrived on location first. An off-duty KVFD career firefighter/EMT, Kevin Bambrick, who actually witnessed the crash was also on-location. Both rendered assistance until others arrived.

Chief Gathercole arrived and assumed "Valley Road Command." A second rescue truck was requested with an additional ambulance. Westwood's Rescue 44 and Ambulance 44-1 responded to assist.

Firefighters pulled a line from Engine 8-2 for fire suppression and upon the arrival of Rescue 8, Engine 31-1, and Rescue 44, went into service with rescue tools to extricate the driver of a Jeep. His left foot was stuck between the vehicle's deformation and the brake pedal.

Ambulance 8-1 transported a victim from one of the vehicles to Brandywine Hospital while the extrication was in-progress on the second driver.

The second driver was extricated about thirty minutes later and was transported by Westwood EMS to Brandywine Hospital.

Fire police from KVFD shut down Valley Road until the Sadsbury Township police completed their investigation and cleared the scene. All units were clear by 2:05 PM.
