Early this morning, at 12:19 AM, KVFD units cleared a crash in the 5000 block of Strasburg Road in West Sadsbury Township where a vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver refused EMS treatment and all units left the scene upon the arrival of troopers.

KVFD was then dispatched at 12:35 AM, along with Westwood EMS and Brandywine Hospital's Medic 93 to the area of the Golden Green Quarry on N. Church Street at Chapel Avenue in Parkesburg Borough for an accident with entrapment. County radio reported two vehicles were involved with one person entrapped.

Chief 8(Chief Gathercole) Rescue 8 and Traffic 8 immediately responded from the Central station. Chief Gathercole arrived on scene and found that there was only one vehicle involved, a pick-up truck, and the driver was entrapped. Chief Gathercole established "Rt.#10 Command" and instructed the crew from Rescue 8 to set up for extrication.

While Rescue 8 was preparing for extrication, the pick-up truck erupted in flames and the driver was in great danger. Parkesburg police Sgt. Rick Moran and Ofc. Rodney Discher, Chief Gathercole, and KVFD firefighters immediately performed a rapid extrication and were able to remove the driver. She was treated by EMS on the scene and transported to the Lancaster General Health Trauma Center in Ambulance 8-2 under the care of a paramedic from Brandywine Hospital.

The fire in the interior of the vehicle was quickly extinguished with fire extinguishers and firefighters pulled a hose line from Rescue 8 as a back-up. Additional fire and EMS resources arrived including Westwood's Ambulance 44-1 and an additional medic unit from Brandywine Hospital.

Crews remained on-scene assisting police and M & N Towing. The scene was placed under control at 12:53 AM.

KVFD would like to recognize the quick actions of the Parkesburg Police as well as the crew of Rescue 8 as this incident quickly escalated. Without their quick work, the driver would have perished in the fire. She was extricated just as the flames reached the passenger compartment.

KVFD fire police assisted the police in shutting down the road and diverting traffic during both incidents.

All units cleared at 1:28 AM.
