KVFD and Heart to Heart Partnership Sheds Pounds

By KVFD
December 28, 2015

Over the last few months, KVFD has partnered with the Heart to Heart weight loss program, Julie Cottage, and Dr. John W. Spangenberg to provide a healthy lifestyles/weight loss program. FF/EMT Stephanie Klingler introduced us to the program by starting it herself in the Spring.

Stephanie said,"I started my program April 15, to date I'm down 85 lbs. That works out to a 22.62% weight loss. I still have 15 more lbs to go until I reach my goal."

A group of firefighters and community members started a program specifically designed for KVFD several months ago. Nationwide, the Number 1 killer of firefighters and EMTs is a cardiac event. This program and others we are running in 2016, as well as fitness initiatives, is designed to combat that killer.

Mrs. Cottage said recently,"The last week of our KVFD8 Heart to Heart Weight Loss Challenge has concluded, and I am so impressed with everyone's efforts. It was a very difficult time of year to participate in an event like this, and every single challenger weighs less than when they started. And that is AFTER Thanksgiving and countless holiday parties!!!"

She said,"I did a little analysis, and overall, the KVFD8 Heart to Heart Weight Loss Challengers lost an impressive 77.9 pounds over the 11-week contest. With Thanksgiving and the holiday parties some of those pounds came back, so the actual total loss was 53.1, which is still excellent."

We have enjoyed working with KVFD. I congratulate each participant for their success. The final standings as of 12/18/2015 are:

Kevin Holmes, with an impressive 6.3% loss of his original body weight, is the Champion! Kevin Holmes also has the distinction of a 91% efficiency score, which means he did not have to re-lose many of his pounds. Keep up the great work Kevin!

Kevin Bambrick is the runner-up with a 5.4% loss of his original body weight. Kevin Bambrick did a good job in not needing to re-lose many of his pounds either, with an efficiency score of 78%.

Barbara Domsohn and Corbit Stephens tied for 3rd place with 1.7% loss of their original body weights.

To conclude our Weight Loss Challenge, prizes were presented at last night's meeting. Heart to Heart gave 50% of the original $250 contest fees to KVFD, which leaves $150 to be awarded to Kevin Holmes and Kevin Bambrick. Kevin Holmes will receive $93.75, and Kevin Bambrick will receive $56.25. Both also received KVFD apparel in their new sizes.

The Heart to Heart Weight program was developed by a group of Cardiologists as a sensible weight loss program and is now available to the general public. Contact them at:
