Residential Hazardous Materials Incident

On Thursday, at 12:01 PM, KVFD, the Gap Fire Company, Christiana Community Ambulance and the Chester County Haz-Mat team were dispatched to a residential hazardous materials incident at a home in the 300 block of Quarry Road, West Sadsbury Township. The caller reported that they accidently mixed rust remover and hydrogen peroxide and a hazard cloud was filling the house.

Upon arrival, firefighters from the Gap Fire Company ensured that all occupants were safely out of the house while EMS checked the family members. Two were exposed but refused any treatment or transport.

Firefighters secured the area while the Chester County Haz-Mat was responding. Upon the arrival of the team, haz-mat team members investigated and found that there was no further hazard. Firefighters then used fans to assist in ventilating the house.

All units were clear by 1:16 PM.

Reports intially were that those chemicals when mixed may have created a vapor of hydro-sulphite acid or hydrochloric acid.
