Last Week's SCBA Confidence Training - Why Do We do It

So what does this video portray?

A "Mayday Drill" after running a SCBA confidence course in full turnout gear and breathing air on a SCBA.

Imagine, you are now in trouble, lost or entangled, running out of air, and need to slow your breathing and buy some time until your partners can find you.

Mayday has been called and hopefully acknowledged on your radio; the SCBA’s alarm is activated with a piercing sound and flashing lights, and you, despite the circumstances, need to control your breathing and heart rate, all while probably saying what may be a last prayer.

Once that air is gone, the regulator has to come off and you can make a token last-ditch effort to save your life by breathing through a gloved hand. However, just one breath of superheated air will be your last, and that will soon happen. You are going to die. Moreover, did I mention that superheated air is burning you alive through your turnout gear as you are trying to slow your breathing and survive?

Remember this description the next time you see a firefighter, and thank him or her for their dedication. The reason that firefighter described above is in this situation is that they are searching your home for you or your family.

Much like our KVFD and Gap firefighters, along with others, did last night searching a home for victims.
