***Information on Hurricane Sandy***

By Fire Chief Richard Klingler II
October 28, 2012

Hurricane Sandy is fast approaching our region. Borough and fire company reps as well as the emergency management coordinators have been in contact with the EOC (emergency operations center) and Chester County Emergency Services throughout the days to getting the latest on the impinging storm as it makes its way up the coast.

The Parkesburg Borough has declared a state of emergency. What does that mean to you? Well, the answer varies a bit from state to state, but basically, declaring a state of emergency gives the governor and his emergency management team a bit of extra latitude to deal with a situation quickly and with maximum coordination. Most of these powers are fairly straightforward; the governor can close state offices, deploy the National Guard and other emergency responders, and make evacuation recommendations.
Other powers are specific to a certain situation. For example, in a blizzard a governor can impose travel restrictions to clear roads for snowplows and other emergency vehicles.

There are No travel restrictions at this time in Parkesburg Borough.

As part of helping our communities we ask that you, the residents, prepare your home and family for a large amount of rain along with high winds. Reports indicate that these elements will begin sometime Sunday evening and continue into Wednesday. Power outages, Flooding, trees and wire down, etc.

"The first thing we recommend is to keep informed about where the storm is and where it is headed, by listening to your radio and television or viewing web-based weather sites for the projected storm path," said Bobby Kagel, deputy director for Chester County Emergency Management.

Please also be aware of flooding of roads and underpasses. These roads flood quickly and sometimes without warning. If you come across a flooded area, do not drive through it. Now, by law, motorists who ignore signs and have to be rescued will have to pay expenses and will see a $250 dollar fine doubled to $500 dollars. The borough will be closing down roads as soon as these problems arise.

There are several evacuation sites available:
Parkesburg Borough Hall – 1st Ave
Parkesburg VFW - 406 4th Ave
Parkesburg Fire Company – 1st Ave
As always, in case of an emergency, dial 911.

In case of any emergency information that needs to be passed to the community, we will start the reverse 911 systems with the information.

Thank you and Be Safe
